Ira D. Handelman

Ira D. Handelman has provided public affairs, government relations, community outreach, entitlement, public education and affordable housing services to California and Los Angeles area public and private sector clients for the past 35 years. He has represented major commercial, residential, retail and industrial projects and is considered an expert in community outreach programs for real estate development projects. He has represented a diverse group of clients including A.F. Gilmore Company, JH Snyder Company, Browning Ferris Industries, Vons/Pavilions Grocery Stores, Fashion Square Shopping Center, The Hanover Company, NCA/Common Fund, Decron Properties, The Clarett Group, Bomel Companies and the 7-Eleven Corporation. He has also worked with numerous cities and counties throughout California on development projects and public education campaigns.
Mr. Handelman has formed and managed several companies that provided a wide range of government relations, community outreach and real estate services. He has worked on projects ranging from a multi-billion dollar landfill, a 350,000 sq. ft. big box retail, office and restaurant development, a 539 unit mixed use apartment/retail and hotel project and a 1,000,000 sq. ft. mixed use housing and retail project. He has successfully sited retailers such as Bloomingdale’s, Target, Best Buy, Sav-On Drug Stores, Jiffy Lube, 7-Eleven, Wendy’s and Vons/Pavilions in communities throughout Southern California.
Mr. Handelman also has extensive experience in the field of affordable housing. As Executive Consultant for the United Community and Housing Development Corporation, he was responsible for project planning, supervision and community relations services for neighborhood revitalization, economic development and subsidized housing for seniors and families. As Executive Director of the Corporation for Better Housing he developed multi-Family and senior housing projects in cities throughout California.
Mr. Handelman received his Masters of Public Administration degree from the University of Southern California with certificates in Health Planning and Health Service Administration and a Bachelors degree in History from Rutgers University. He also did graduate work at the Columbia School of Social Work.
He is active in a variety of civic and community organizations. He is currently a Co-Chair of the Legislative Affairs Committee for the LA Chapter of the American Jewish Committee and has been an active member of Milken Community High School and Stephen S. Wise Temple. Mr. Handelman is also a member of the Valley Industry & Commerce Association, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Miracle Mile Chamber of Commerce, Sherman Oaks Chamber of Commerce, Westchester/LAX/Marina Del Rey Chamber of Commerce, Woodland Hills/Tarzana Chamber of Commerce, Universal City North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and served as a Co-Chair for the Valley Industry & Commerce Association (VICA) Land Use Committee.
